French Dancing Master to King Louis XIV.
One of the original members of the group to whom Louis XIV gave the charter for establishing the first known as the Academic Royale de la Danse, in Paris, France.
In 1671 he became Maître de Ballet at the Academie. He named the five positions of the feet upon which all movements are based, and laid down the precepts which form the basis of technical virtuosity. He was the first to codify the dance.
